Podcast on Online Communication

The podcast I listen to was Think Fast Talk Smart: How to Shine Online and Excel at Virtual Communication. The host of this podcast is Matt Abrahams a communications professor at Stanford University. He gave us some tips on the best way to be seen when we are in a online meeting:

  1. Fill up half the screen with your face and body, try out how you look on the screen before the meeting starts.
  2. Be well lit, as human beings we are always reading each others faces to see how we should perceive what is being said and how others are perceiving it.
  3. Raise the camera so its at eye level and looking into the camera, so it appears you are looking at the people you are talking to.
  4. Voice variation, so people can hear the emotion with the words you are saying.
  5. Make visible gestures
  6. Paraphrase things to acknowledge that you heard what the other person said, and it will make it easier to voice your opinion and or change topics.
This podcast reminded me of the chapter in our textbook "Perception, Self, and Communication" In the introduction page of the "Perception, Self, and Communication" chapter on page 83 it defines perception. It is defined as "the use of the senses to process information about the external environment." This reminded me of the podcast because when communicating online you want to be perceived positively and that you care about what you (and your coworkers) are discussing.
